Gerda wants to fly to the moon. On her way to the launching pad she meets an eagle who paints landscapes, moles who are mining for coal but finding diamonds, a mouse who sings an aria from an opera, and an owl who studies the moon with his telescope. When Gerda peeks into the telescope and sees the moon's cold, bleak surface, she decides to stay here on earth and let other silly geese fly into space.
