The book charts the development of costume from the "bare necessities", such as the fig leaf worn by Adam and Eve and the skins and furs used by prehistoric peoples through increasingly elaborate garments. A step-by-step photographic sequence shows the lengthy process of an 18th century lady dressing herself up in petticoats and bustles. Whole spreads are devoted to the history of underwear, shoes, wedding dresses, children's clothes and even bathing costumes.
