The National Curriculum for Geography places great emphasis on mapping skills: even at Key Stage 1 a first atlas will be an essential reference tool for children entering school. The Oxford Infant Atlas looks as good as the best picture-book: starting from a dramatic view from outer space, it closes in gradually on the child's known world, and introduces the conventions of simple cartography.
